Record a Zoom meeting on your Mac as a participant

Without the host's record permission, without a bot — locally.

The wall everyone hits

Zoom's record button belongs to the host. As a participant you can press it only if the host has granted you permission, cloud recording belongs to paid plans, and asking mid-meeting — “could you enable recording for me?” — is exactly the interruption nobody wants to make twice. So the meeting goes unrecorded, again.

If you are the host on a paid plan, Zoom's own recording is the right tool: use it. This page is for the other case — the meetings you attend rather than run.

Recording outside Zoom

Nothing requires the recording to happen inside Zoom. The whole meeting reaches your Mac anyway: your voice through the microphone, everyone else as audio Zoom plays. Capture the two together and you have the meeting — no host setting involved, no bot in the participant list, no notetaker joining as a fake attendee.

The catch is the second half. QuickTime and most recorders capture input devices only, so they record you and lose the room. The other side is system audio, which macOS exposes through exactly one interface — the screen capture API. That is what RecordCue uses (and why it asks for Screen Recording permission even for audio-only recordings), so there is no BlackHole driver to install and nothing to reroute.

The three steps

1. Install RecordCue and leave it in the menu bar. Zoom's Mac app is one of the services it knows out of the box — and Zoom in a browser tab counts too.
2. Join the meeting. The moment Zoom opens your microphone, a cue appears: Zoom meeting. This is the part that fixes the real failure — forgetting — because the reminder comes from the call itself, not from a calendar.
3. Press Audio only, or a screen mode if the slides matter. Both sides are mixed into one ordinary file as it records; headphones change nothing.

When the meeting ends, RecordCue asks whether to stop. The file lands in ~/Movies/RecordCue/Zoom/, dated and named, and can be transcribed on the device — each passage marked as you, them, or both. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account: the recording exists only on your Mac.

Say it out loud

Zoom shows its recording indicator only for its own recording, so nothing announces yours. Announce it yourself: in many places you must tell the other participants, and in some you need their agreement — the FAQ has the longer answer. One sentence at the start of the meeting settles it.
